Kilograms and Pounds Definitions
What is a Kilogram?
The kilogram (symbol: kg) is the base unit of mass in the International System of Units (SI). Since 2019, it has been defined based on the Planck constant, a fundamental physical constant equal to 6.62607015 × 10⁻³⁴ kg⋅m²⋅s⁻¹.
Previously, the kilogram was defined as the mass of the International Prototype Kilogram, a platinum-iridium cylinder stored in France. The change to a constant-based definition provides greater precision and stability.
The kilogram is widely used worldwide for measuring mass in science, industry, commerce, and everyday life. It is the only SI base unit that includes a prefix in its name.
What is a Pound?
The pound (symbol: lb or lbs) is a unit of mass used primarily in the United States and some other countries. The most common pound today is the international avoirdupois pound, defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms.
The pound has historical roots in the Roman libra, from which the abbreviation “lb” derives. Throughout history, many different pounds existed with varying weights, but the avoirdupois pound became standardized in 1959.
In the US, pounds are commonly used for measuring body weight, food products, and various commodities. The pound is divided into 16 ounces.
